Vanessa L. Gibson
Vanessa L. Gibson, a devoted lifelong New Yorker, exemplifies commitment to public service. From her early roots as a student in the city’s public school system to her distinguished political career, Gibson’s unwavering commitment to the Bronx community has been a constant.
Gibson’s journey started with her graduation from Murray Bergtraum High School for Business Careers in 1997. Her passion for sociology, business, and criminal justice led her to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from the State University at Albany (UAlbany) in 2001. During her senior year, Gibson interned for Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene of the 77th Assembly District, a professional connection that soon developed into a lifelong mentorship.
Gibson’s dedication to her community drove her to tirelessly serve the 77th Assembly District alongside Assemblywoman Greene as a Legislative Analyst. She was instrumental in developing public policies catering to the district’s needs, creating jobs, and providing assistance to local residents, community-based organizations, labor unions, parents, and educators.
Throughout her early career, Gibson formulated public policies affecting low-income families, senior citizens, young people, and working people in the West Bronx. This included legislation aimed at protecting housing rights of Section 8 recipients, improving educational opportunities, aiding seniors, and encouraging job creation.
In 2003, Gibson was promoted to Bronx District Office Manager for Assemblywoman Greene, becoming an integral part of the 77th Assembly District’s operations. Her role included overseeing staff, working on critical West Bronx projects, and maintaining a strong presence in the local community. She gained a reputation as a fierce advocate for tenants’ rights, affordable quality health care, equal educational opportunities, elderly support, and long-term employment opportunities.
Gibson obtained her Master’s Degree in Public Administration, with a concentration in Policy Analysis & Evaluation, from Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY), in 2009. This additional educational achievement further solidified her role as an influential community leader.
In 2009, Gibson was elected to a seat in the New York State Assembly, a role she held until 2014. Later, she represented the 16th district as a member of the New York City Council from 2014 to 2021. She continued to work tirelessly for her constituents, particularly in areas of housing, health care, senior and youth programs, and job opportunities.
Gibson’s illustrious career took a historical turn in 2022 when she was elected as the Borough President of The Bronx, becoming the first African American and first female to hold the position. Running on a platform focused on recovery from COVID-19 impact, food insecurity, and housing instability, Gibson continues to make a difference for her community. Her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts embody a shining example of public service and community commitment.
